FOR EVERYONE WHO WANTED TO MARRY A "ROLLER" - THIS IS FOR YOU!

Marlena (1976)

One of my very favourite roller's songs this.

And I've picked out some really good pics of the boys in their heyday.

YES! - I did have the cropped white trousers with the tartan band around the bottom, YES - I did run around with a tartan scarf tied to my wrist . . . didn't we all?

I remember the very first time I heard Marlena. I was 10 and at a family new year party, my 16 yr old cousin played the entire Roller's album - and this song really hit me. I'd never forget it - but it was some years later that I actually bought the album with this track on it.

And now . . I present it to you too - ENJOY!

I'm only telling you what Les...as well as the record producers at Arista...have repeatedly said. I think they would know. I wasn't there...so i cannot claim to have witnessed it. The members of the Rollers only had moderate abilities on musical instruments. Studio time back in the 70's was extremely expensive....even for successful bands....so it was not unusual to bring very sophisticated session players into the studio who could get the songs right in one or two takes instead of twenty.

I don't believe it to be true that they ALL always used session musicians. Some bands were forced to use them by their record companies (eg Sweet) some used them occasionally to save time, just adding their solos (drum, guitar, keyboards, vocals etc) if they were touring (as the BCRs did a lot - touring that is). There was a rule for Top of The Pops, they couldn't play live, but HAD to record a fresh version of their song that day, to mime to during the live show - musicians union rules!

Umm.. I am not sure about that, I have friend that is a close friend of Eric's. I never did ask her about this. I'm going to send her an e-mail and check this out. She just visited Eric a few months ago in Spain where he now lives. I am sure she would have told me because she has known him for years, since she was a teenager. Thanks for the info just the same. I'll let you know what she has to say. ~ Peace ~ Star :)

If you have watched any of the Bay City Roller documentaries....they make it very clear. Les fully admits it in both the VH-1 "Behind the Music" documentary as well as the documentary titled "Who got the Bay City Rollers Millions." I'm kind of shocked that this would be a surprise to you....due to the fact that most of the "bubble-gum" type bands from that era ALL used session musicians on their albums. It's common knowledge.

They didn't play their own instruments on their albums....but they did play them at live shows.....or atleast they tried to. The albums were cut by professional session players....with the Rollers providing vocals only.

The whole "milk" story was a fabrication by their manager (Tam Paton). He kept a very tight hold on their public image. He knew who their fan base was.

Thanks for your answer, guessed it was like that anyway! I am old now, but still listen and think about the BCR as the best "Boys band" ever. Did fancy "Take that" too. But they were more like showing up than the BCR, just thought they were sincere right along. Who does not like "Whisky"??

Yes they're still VERY big in Japan! The milk story? ... The Rollers were big in the UK when I was 10, and remember (now you mention it) the ''Teenybopper'' magazines (as the fans were called at the time), ran such a story ...if I remember rightly it was Woody who was the milk fiend - but I'm fairly certain, thinking back - it would have been only a part truth!... they are Scots lads after all - THE home of the best whiskey in the world :D In other words, just squeaky clean image for their fans

I heard back then that the boys were only drinking MILK? Was that true or only some media story?
