I went to a concert last weekend. THE band that I’d always wanted to see since I was a teenager and despaired that I’d never see because they’d ‘broken up’ before I could.Peter Murphy does Bauhaus.It was legendary. Even so, I was so very conscious that I wasn’t ‘transported’ as much as I could have been. What is it about concerts that gives you a fantastic experience, yet leaves you wanting more? No doubt it comes from unreasonable expectations. Born from years of fantasising the live experience, decades of imaginings. Moments of complete resonance when the band hit those notes you’d heard hundreds of times before and Peter channeled that exact performance from yesteryear. And then…lost in the reality of reality, it doesn’t quite match with the performance in your head.Maybe I could have ‘lost myself ‘ more at the gig (I was rather too star-struck), but I knew there would always be a disconnect. It is the moment when the artist exits the figurative stage and you take over with the story and the characters in your own mind. And if the time comes when those stars really do take the stage before your mind, they will inevitably deviate from your script and to put it dramatically, disappoint.I need to make it clear, musically Peter Murphy and his ‘Bauhaus’ band DID NOT disappoint. It was fabulous and just as importantly educational, highlighting the creation of something new between the music and its listeners, even if that means the 'death of the author'.
