Easily understood as a protest song of defeat against the city of Nashville, a town that disowned Cash for many reasons. He certainly wasn't their kind of country, and he liked too many diverse talents like Pete Seeger and Louis Armstrong. Now, he has been claimed once again, and the city even houses a superb museum. But we should not forget that while Johnny Cash loved Nashville, he never was Nashville, and even though the people love him, we shouldn't forget that the system didn't. But examine the records and you'll easily find that Cash beat the system, like John Henry himself. :)
