A great song from the late Barbara Acklin, being the follow up to the sublime Love Makes a Woman. Recorded in 1968 and issued twice in the UK on MCA in 1969.

Brunswick Record thought it would be a bigger hit as a jazz instrumental; they were right but Dusty Springfield proved it can be a big hit with vocals.

Here's another question from this crazy white boy: Why wasn't this version a bigger hit? All I and many other people remember is the instrumental version. Why wasn't this version promoted and marketed more efficiently? With all respect to great instrumentalists, SONGS ARE MEANT TO BE SUNG!

LOVE seeing the vinyl played, your equipment looks so pristine! I always knew of "soulful strut",and I knew "swing out sister's" version was a re-mix, but never knew it was first sung by barbara acklin, THANKS for sharing this.

The disconnect with the younger generation is so wide, you can the pass the Grand Canyon right through it. When I play Brick "Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody" & Wille Hutch "I Choose You", young people ask me, Did they copy that from "Kid n' Play" and "Jaheim?"

me 2! I am shocked still, as I had no idea it wasn't Swing Out that sang it first. The original is very nice, yes. Both are good in their own ways. :)

Although Barbara Acklin — who was married to Eugene Record — recorded the song first, producer Carl Davis removed her voice from the track, replaced it with a piano solo by Floyd Morris, and released the resultant track in November 1968 as "Soulful Strut" credited to Young-Holt Unlimited; it became a #3 hit in the United States [1] Neither Eldee Young nor Red Holt is believed to have played on the track, which was the work of session musicians identified only as the Brunswick Studio Band
