The other thing that harpooned this album, believe it or not, was APPLE records. After sitting on a finished, unreleased ASS, (I guess fearing it wasn't good enough?) APPLE, for whatever reason, decided to release ASS almost simultaneously with this, their first WB album. The result was confusion. People didn't know which was really the "New" Badfinger album and which was something esle... net result both albums sold poorly.

Sadly I think in this case the "lost friend" pete is referring to is the bands (or his) success/popularity. Despite the fact that Wish You Were Here was yet to come, the writing was on the wall. Stan Polly had stolen the rudder and the ship was headed for oblivion, no way to stop it.
