Tribute to Charles Henry "Baby" Tate (1916-72), a great Carolina bluesman who sadly died before recognition. His main influences were Blind Boy Fuller (who he knew) and Lightnin' Hopkins. Although he recorded quite a few songs for the Trix label they were never issued. His only full cd is available on the Bluesville label (#BV1072)

I learned this particular instrumental piece from a cd called "The Blues" Folkways A101 (still available at Smithsonean). The material of this cd was recorded for a shortfilm with the same title by Sam Charters. It also features Furry Lewis and Pink Anderson.

I'm in standard tuning, key of E, and playing my L-00v made by John Gréven.

Note I use an unwound G string (018), something many bluesmen did, to get a more twangy sound when bending.

I did a five part LESSON on this tune, here's the link to the first one

and the second one

I also uploaded the original version by Baby Tate

Many have tried to play in the style of Lightnin' Hopkins. You are one of the few who have totally nailed it. Lightnin' himself would tip his hat to you.

Very nice! What are the guages of the other strings you have there? Did you experiment with the guage of the unwound G before settled on an 18? Thanks.

Man, amazing playing. I can tell that it takes you to the heavens when you're playing. The style: The best thing of the song. From this video I can tell that it takes more than skill to play blues. I suppose it's the desire to keep listening to it and the rythm that keeps you playing. And that's the thing that keeps me too hehe... Good job man! Very good job...
