Wrong. Music would progress. How do you think we got to where music is today? Composers always wrote music to improvise and invent new tunes and sounds. Back then orchestras would have different interpretations on how to play things, this is how they improvised. Today people improvise melodically and harmonically more often than the older style of improvisation through tempo interpretation, and timbre. What if people stopped respecting original paintings and added their own colors?
