I recall looking into my buddy's dead eyes as he sat up across from where I was curled into the fetal position(in the rear of the plane). It was noisy and windy. I was shivering and bleeding to death. I was crying out loud because I was dying in such a senseless fashion(and very quickly). I still can't seem to get over that memory. In tears, mox.

Wasn't this called Londonderry Aire when it was recorded? Or was this to get in the Memphis Belle fans?

James Mac, the Air Force in WWII lost more men than the Marine Corpsand the Navy combined. Most people don't know that piece of history.War is a chess board. One hundred Marines killed taking a landing fieldon Iwo Jima easily equaled one B-29 and its crew.

The problem with the World War Two and the 8th Air Force out of Great Britain is that 80% of the B-17 bombers didn't come home. This was kept quiet by the President Franklin D. Roosevelt administration until the 1970s, because they believed it would be a public panic that the Air Force wasn't coming home. After 17-missions, you were an average survivor; after 24-missions it was a death penalty, and why the Memphis Belle is an important war story.

Thank you for your selfless and courageous service to our country, Major Northrup!

Given the time period it was made in, the mission it was designed for and the phenomenal abuse it could and often did withstand, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress gets my nod as the number 1 aircraft of all time.

"I have had the amazing experience to fly in a restored B-17 called "Aluminum Overcast" some years ago." Wow! Incredibly envious. What a wonderful experience. This was my dad's plane in the Pacific and he was lucky and brave to have lived through all he experienced - though I don't want to take away from his skill. I'm grateful I was able to get him to relate some of it - I so regret I didn't ask more questions while he was alive and let him know how in awe I am of all he did.
