Axl was paranoid/worried about the crowd because of the fans that died in Donnington...he knew that people could get very hurt so he watched for it...it was the trauma of playing that show where people died. It seems sometimes that he was a jerk for stopping shows and lecturing but it came from a protective place, I think.
