For people who don't speak english. This song is a love song. A relationship that broke on a vacation in Amsterdam. In more detail:The dream is that the relationship of the songwriter and his girlfriend will find new meaning while on a vacation in Amsterdam. However the dream shattered when in Amsterdam.Their relationship was a fairy-tail not of elfs, princes and and fairies, but of fear and agony (thus a nightmare).She kept asking him to 'hold her'. It is most likely meant to mean 'love her / cherish her'. He says that he doesn't know how. This most likely means that they don't fit together and he doesn't fit her, even if he tries.He suggests to drive to Amsterdam, saying hat their relationship is strong and healthy. In truth the relationship had already for a while been in danger. Weather he was aware of that at this point is not clear but it is likely and thus the suggestion to drive to Amsterdam meant to save the relationship.In Amsterdam she brakes up. He tries to convince her to continue the relationship. She doubts that there is any hope. She apparently leaves him alone in Amsterdam.Ironically he says that one day they were hoping of the perfect love (gold and red roses falling on them).After they break up he says that he would never have been able to keep her. There are winners and losers in love, and he is on the loosing side this time.Interestingly this song is not at all about Amsterdam, and the name of the city could be any in this song.
