It's really an amazing style of playing the chanter (pipes' melody-pipe). Periodically I will sit down with my pipes and maybe 8 bars of a Paddy Maloney rendition, for about a month. His staccato (silences between notes) somehow manages to deliver big breaks between notes yet long sounding notes he shapes or colors --and this is all done with fingers, there is no mouth or diaphragm that the sax and oboe players can use to help in the expression.
