Just have to re-share this amazing Avengers song. From a 4 song e.p. produced by Sex Pistols' Steve Jones who heard this S.F. band when they opened for the Pistols' last ever show at Winterland. Can't believe how beautiful this is. My heart sometimes begins to melt when I hear it.

Like others have commented previously, this song is simply an American treasure; a beautifully crafted marriage of instrumentation and lyrical revelation. This is probably the slowest tempo song that they wrote, but in my opinion it is their finest. It sounds almost like electrified folk music—punk/folk? It seems to me to continue the folk tradition of using music as a medium of protest and cultural critique/search for meaning. They should have gotten into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the strength of this song alone. The power of the Avenger’s music is stunning for it’s fierceness, simplicity, and emotional appeal.

Ah yes, the Avengers. One of the great treasures of early U.S. punk, From San Francisco, the Avengers' first eponymous e.p., released in 1977, heralded the arrival of a very special talent and a major force in punk. The three tracks, Car Crash, We Are the One and I Believe in Me can hardly be improved upon. The music was forceful and blistering and came rushing at you with urgency These young American punks sure had something to say! And Penelope Houston's singing was absolutely tremendous. When you heard her you just automatically believed everything she said. What feeling in a female punk voice! Besides this first e.p. they only released a compilation album and another 12' e.p. on the White Noise label in 1979. The tracks are The American In Me, Uh Oh!!, Corpus Christi and White Nigger. The album was produced by Steve Jones who plays piano on Uh Oh!!. (The Avengers opened for the Sex Pistols at their last ever show at Winterland, so Jones must have liked what he heard and stuck around to produce them.) The e,p, is a total triumph. All four songs are great. I'm not going to say anything about Corpus Christi other than IMO it's transcendental.

@IGotARight Thanks for your help. I sort of thought it might be that cd cause it listed 2 versions of song from 2 different dates. Now I'll have to buy cd which might be hard. 1 listed very expensive, other from ugh Italy with all its postal problems. Hope the Avengers do it right, on vinyl from the master tapes all analogue mastering. It will sound great like this. Just bought a 1st pressing of the album but haven't compared it to blue vinyl pressing. This GREAT album deserves a GREAT reissue.

@IGotARight Thanks. I don't usually get jealous but I have to tell you I'm a little jealous hearing your story. I try to stay away from reformed groups concerts because I don.t want to be badly disappointed. I mean they originally had youthful energy which is so intoxicating to hear.Great to hear they sounded so good. Maybe you'd know the answer to this. On utube there's a version of their song The American In Me I've never heard before with my comments. Do you know the source of this version?
