This is the song "The Wind" by Atmosphere from Sad Clown Bad Dub II. A very metaphorical and symbolic song.

Edit - 14/01/2013: I wrote the following whacked-out interpretation of this song about two years ago and I'd just like to say that I don't really see where the hell I was going with it so many apologies!

I THINK that this song is a very well written commentary on the state of Hip-Hop at the time, amongst other things.

"The Wind" seems to be representative of a trend, a fad or something that will pass by. "It's nothing, it's only a little wind. A distinct, somewhat discreet approach to the maize" - the maize here represents the public and the wind represents your average flash in the pan pop OR rap star.

"Come on, keep up the pace, you've already won the race; cute baby hamster, let's try to make him run in place" - Possibly questioning why some emcees seem to lose quality once they "win the race" i.e. reach the top. An alternate interpretation is that Slug may be talking about himself, but I won't go on about that.

"Look at the wounds, it's destined to die soon. And the way I see it, we're obligated to eat it - so treat it, with grins while it's standing on its last limbs. Feed it and fatten it up for when the feast begins" - this is a representation of how stars can be build up and then knocked down easily. Perhaps many people recognise the fact that this star will not be around (look at the wounds) but they still treat him/her well so that they can cause them to fall from grace.

"I drew the blueprints out on a sidewalk with chalk, so when the rain starts, they won't be able to read our plans" - Most definitely a reference to an Aesop Rock track called "No Regrets" in which the protagonist - purposefully named "Lucy" - draws on the sidewalks with chalk in the first verse. I think Slug is saying that he was vague about his career plan (being a rapper) as a means of protection for whenever people began to criticise or question him ("The rain" which is used by Slug to represent sadness and/or depression).

"And I'm compiling a list of demands, so let me get a show of fists and hands to see who's down with the program" - Slug is going to build a fan base of like-minded individuals.

"Party over here: free love, free truth, free care, care free, bring your whole crew up there (crew affair?). "Freedom of speech and thought: scot free. Free your mind." - What Slug would offer to the people, or what would happen if Slug had his way.

"Forgot to pack a spine? Feel free to borrow mine" - Brilliant lyric. By "spine" Slug is referring to bravery and courage; he is basically saying "you're spineless? I'll take the fall for you" hence speaking about how he is the one who speaks up, because everyone else is too scared.

"I'll be the thorn in the side of drama. Comma. It's cool 'cause we died with honour. Comma." - "I'll stop the craziness *flash forward in time* it was worth it because I died a hero". Slug implies that attempting to "save the world" will cause his death.

"Hey don't worry honey, I ain't gon' hurt you. I'm just here to strip you of your pride and your gear and your virtues" - "honey" = the world/society. Slug says that he plans on dissecting society thoroughly but he won't hurt "her".

"It's not clear. Proceed with caution. 'Cause fear, is no longer an option" - Slug needs to be careful in his approach to "saving the world/hip-hop"; he must also be strong and fearless

"(and maybe) and maybe my issues, are not your issues, but everyone has to sleep and everybody carries weight" - Perhaps not everyone can relate to what Slug is talking about, but everyone needs to vent (interestingly, Slug uses "sleep" to mean "vent") and everyone has weight on their shoulders.

"You can't escape regret but you might regret escape. If you closed your eyes and held it would you recognise the shape?" - This is rather ambiguous. I'm assuming that Slug is saying that if you cling to something (Hip-Hop) tightly, then you might end up forgetting what it was that made you want to have it in the first place.

I'll continue this soon. If (for some weird reason) you'd like to see more of me, then here are my two Tumblrs:

http://almolloy.tumblr.com

http://nameonaparkbench.tumblr.com

The former is where I post solely original content and give my thoughts on certain things while the latter is where I tend to reblog more stuff (but I still do post a lot of original content on it). I don't really post anything Atmosphere related on either as I'm not as big an Atmosphere fan as I once was.
