I am not sure why the conversation exists on which VERSION is better here… Bruce Springsteen WROTE the song and it is HIS song! While this version from The Band does a more "upbeat" sound with it, which is catchy, and I like, the Boss has done it like this long before anyone else (there are several) live. You wanna hear a catchy tune, try Bruce's live. While I like this cover, it is Bruce's song and even the sound is covered from him doing it live. The weird thing is that John Anderson (country) does a version that is almost identical in melody to this but without the mandolin. Now, artists just do covers of covers of covers…. and so on.

Something I keep noticing on comments . . . . is it me, or does it seem that the people who are not players themselves are the ones who try and figure out who is the best or what version is better? I am a lifetime player, and in my experience mature players don't do that . . . point being that Springsteen's version of this song to me is a different song. I like them both for different reasons, and to compare them is to miss the point of both.Same thing with Watchtower. I learned that song when it came out, long before Hendrix did it. I play Hendrix stuff, but to me it is two different things . . . . Hendrix made it a Hendrix song. Dylan's version in many ways is a different tune with a different effect on the listener. And I don't mean the lyrics Jimi destroyed (not a bad thing, either). But to compare them is silly to me, just like Atlantic city. I love this tune and it made me look at mandolin in a way I had not.Hendrix also did Hey Joe, but in L.A. we all knew it before he did, by The Leaves. Both are very good, and very different. But comparing is like asking if sex is better than pizza . . . . . . not everything is a competition.
