#EveryHitSongEver - "Angel Interceptor" by Ash was a #14 hit in the UK in 1995.

I think it's more the British bands now that have really coined the word 'Indie'. I don't really remember any 90's Alternative bands calling themselves Indie.

Indie honestly goes back to labels like Atlantic when they first started out...signing African American acts that couldn't get mainstream deals in the 50's. Now Atlantic has long since been acquired under larger entities...but being indie categorically just has to do with small budget and self-funded records. Also I love REM and Husker Du and that was certainly a great era for indie rawk.

You're the one coming on here and spouting nonsense, dude. You do realize the term indie was around WAY before those bands, right? Some people consider the Velvet Underground the first indie band. And then there was a giant boom in the 80s with bands like Husker Du and REM and then in the 90s, etc. I don't know where you get your info from, but coming on here and saying that all indie bands sound like the ones you listed is dead wrong. I'm not trying to be mean, just telling it like it is.

I'm not the one who started the trend so don't get pissy at me.

I can think of proper genres for each of those artists that aren't indie. You're just being lazy.

James Brown

Yes that is the proper definition but it is used to describe a load of bands now that are clearly not indie as you describe.

Indie isn't a sound. It's a marketing term to describe bands on minor labels or bands self-releasing.

Back in the day. Ash were always labelled as punk NOT indie. Personally I think they were an amalgamation of the two.

Indie is any rock devoid of polishing,
