"Art Lover" was released in the summer of 1981 on The Kinks' 18th studio album, Give the People What They Want.
Always been a huge fan of The Kinks' Arista label records (1977's Sleepwalker through 1984's Word of Mouth) and hoping to try and work a vid for some of my fav tracks from the period.
"Art Lover" is one of my couple top tracks from Give the People What They Want. I think it's an immensely sad tune.
When I hear the tune nowadays, I can't help but think about a funny experience with a non-fan. :-) I was driving to a conference in another town one day with some colleagues, and as per usual I had taken my music mix CD's (including many of the tracks I've made vids for) along to get me through the many hours on the road....I always volunteer to drive so I can choose the music! LOL! "Art Lover" was playing and one female passenger was shocked and aghast with the lyric....she stated something to the effect of; "What IS this music?!" and "Why are you listening to a song about a pervert in the park?!" I tried to explain that its not really about a pervert, but a man missing his own daughter so much that he is reduced to standing around parks and LOOKING like a pervert...just so he can remember what's been "taken from" him. She was having none of it and didn't have much to say to me the rest of the trip. Oh well, great art isn't for everyone.
Thanks for watching!
As usual HUGE THANKS to everyone who's art made this new art possible....THANK YOU!!!!
[Lyrics]
Sunday afternoon there's something special
It's just like another world
Jogging in the park is my excuse
To look at all the little girls
I'm not a flasher in a rain coat
I'm not a dirty old man
I'm not gonna snatch you from your mother
I'm an art lover, come to daddy
Ah, come to daddy, come to daddy
Pretty little legs, I want to draw them
Like a Degas ballerina
Pure white skin, like porcelain
She's a work of art and I should know
I'm an art lover, come to daddy
And I'll give you some spangles
Little girl, don't notice me
Watching, as she innocently plays
She can't see me staring at her
Because I'm always wearing shades
She feeds the ducks, looks at the flowers
I follow her around for hours and hours
I'd take her home, but that could never be
She's just a substitute for what's been taken from me
Ah, come to daddy, come on
Sunday afternoon can't last forever
Wish I could take you home
So, come on, give us a smile
Before you vanish out of view
I've learned to appreciate you
The way art lovers do
And I only want to look at you
