When I was a teenager in the mid-1980s, like many of my teenager friends I was very fascinated by Joy Division, in particular by their album "Closer". I remember that in those days I used to put Closer on the turntable, turn off the lights in my room, and fall asleep to the music. The music from Closer was very beautiful and hypnotic, and left a big impression on me. In particular I loved the synth strings used in that album. It was the ARP Omni-2, also used in other songs by the band. A great album, a great performance by the band, a masterful production by Martin Hannett, and a big influence for my music since those days..

You don't have many Italian synths Paolo! What do you think of the Siel Orchestra II?

Thanks for this time travelling for my favourite band sounds. No modern synths today can do this.

I too nodded off to Closer on countless nights in the 80s. If I stayed awake to the end, hearing the sublime closer (no pun i.) Decades was my reward.

This was a much used, though largely forgotten synth from the early days. It was used by everyone who wanted great polyphonic sounds without the horror of owning and using a polymoog.  Many of the Arp's sounds belong in the 80s. However, there are some sounds which have a wonderful melancholy about them, and which are almost impossible to create anywhere else. These Omnis belong in museums now as so few remain in working order. It was a creature of its time, and it did a much better job of bringing polyphony to the masses until the Prophet than anything else.

Beautiful sounds coming from that Omni! I can't stand Joy Division (if only Antares had invented Autotune while Ian Curtis was alive!), but I love the Omni-2 (as well as the other ARP "string synths").Keep the fantastic videos coming! ++++
