I thought I liked the other version better, but now I think it is a dead heat. This version is spectacular.

I believe the first song written by Aretha on album! I love when Aretha is singing and playing the piano. It always enhances her singing more!

@miketlow You are ABSOLUTELY right on your point of Columbia recording her correctly. We get to her range, tone and phrasing when her voice was at it best!

@miketlow Good point. Her Columbia material is pure Gold to my ears.

It's amazing that this was Aretha's first self penned song to appear on record! Columbia may not have gotten her blockbuster hits. What Columbia did do was record her correctly. Her vocals are upfront and center!

@MrMojoric: Please go give a listen to her coverage of a song called 'With Pen In Hand'.....she will take you on a journey with that one too.

The version you like was recorded a couple years after this one; it's from one of her last Columbia lps," YEAH!!". I agree it is better. YEAH!! was billed as "live from a nightclub w/ her trio", but it was really "live" in the studio w/ fake club chatter and applause dubbed in.

People try to compare her & Mariah Carey........ But Mariah ain't worth a damn coat rack at Macy's.

She was only 20 when she recorded this song... There is another version of this song she sang on her album called "Aretha Franklin- The Early Years". I like that version better...... But this is still nice.
