Lyrics:

Billy-Ray was a Preacher's son,

And when his daddy would visit he'd come along,

When they gathered round and started talking,

That's when Billy would take me walking,

Through the back yard we'd go walking,

Then he'd look into my eyes,

Lord knows to my suprise:

The only one who could ever reach me,

Was the son of a preacher man,

The only boy who could ever teach me,

Was the son of a preacher man,

Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was.

Being good isn't always easy,

No matter how hard I tried,

When he started sweet talking to me,

he'd come tell me everything is alright,

he'd kiss and tell me everything is alright,

Can I get away again tonight?.

The only one who could ever reach me,

Was the son of a preacher man,

The only boy who could ever teach me,

Was the son of a preacher man,

Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was.

How well I remember,

The look that was in his eyes,

Stealing kisses from me on the sly,

Taking time to make time,

Telling me that he's all mine,

Learning from each others knowing,

Looking to see how much we'd grown.

The only one who could ever reach me,

Was the son of a preacher man,

The only boy who could ever teach me,

Was the son of a preacher man,

Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was.

While this version is more soulful, I prefer the Dusty version because it's kinda smooth and dreamy, like a seduction

I know this song was originally written for Aretha, but Jerry Wexler toke it out and gave it to Dusty Springfield...the thing is,their vocals are not even closely matched, but Dusty Springfield's version has all the beat to dance to! The beat of her version was incredible,I guess Aretha later wanted to record this hit song that was meant for her,but then she has to change the beat, and that's just...not it.

This is the first version of the song I heard. I love this version and Dusty Springfield's original version as well.

Dusty my ass. Aretha took this to places Dusty could only wish. Dusty got Dusted by the inimitable Aretha Franklin from the piano to the histronics. P.S. For all the Aretha haters work on your own Medal of Freedom. Bloop

Aretha and Joss have the voice, but Tommy Cogbill's bass line on Dusty's version, IMHO, makes the song...

The minute I saw Aretha's name I knew her version would be more persuasive. Dusty could not sing this kind of fire neither did she have this level of vocal versatility.

Absolute best version. Just on vocals alone... Hands down, no comparison.

Both versions are great. Aretha has more soul to it. Dusty is more pop like. I love both Tina has the worst rendition of it

Sorry, but Dusty blows Aretha away.
