What a combination! The Queen of Soul and Annie Lennox!!
Aretha Franklin, often referred to as the Queen of Soul is considered one of the greatest singers/artists of all time. In 1987, She was the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Annie Lennox is a Scottish singer, songwriter, political activist and philanthropist. In the past few years, she has been a leading advocate for helping African women with HIV/AIDS. Her generosity, involvement and humanitarian contributions are so widespread that it would take a lot of space to name them all.
Annie Lennox was part of a British pop duo called Eurythmics (the other half being David Stewart). They wrote the song which was intended as a feminist anthem. However, it was also criticized for containing some clichés about women in its lyrics by the A.V. Club, an entertainment newspaper and website published by The Onion. Oh well........still a great piece of music!
Here are the LYRICS:
Now there was a time
When they used to say
That behind every great man
There had to be a great woman
Oh in these times of change
You know that it's no longer true
So we're coming out of the kitchen
'Cause there's something
We forgot to say to you
We say, Sisters are doing it for themselves
Standing on their own two feet
And ringing on their own bells
Sisters are doing it for themselves
This is a song to celebrate
The conscious liberation
Of the female state
Mothers, daughters
And their daughters too, yeah
Woman to woman
We're singing with you
The inferior sex
Has got a new exterior, yeah
We got doctors, lawyers
Politicians too, ooh, hoo
Everybody, take a look around
Can you see, can you see, can you see
There's a woman right next to you, ooh hoo
Sisters are doing it for themselves
(Oh, yes, we are)
Standing on their own two feet
And ringing on their own bells
Sisters are doing it for themselves
We ain't making stories
We ain't laying plans
Don't you know thaa
A man still loves a woman
When a woman still loves a man
Just the same way (or though)
Sisters are doing it for themselves
There was a time
When they used to say
That behind every great man
There had to be a great woman
In these times of change
You know that it's no longer true
So we're coming out of the kitchen
'Cause there's something
We forgot to say to you
We say, Sisters are doing it for themselves
Standing on their own two feet
And ringing on their own bells
Sisters are doing it for themselves
Come on, girl
Go for it, go for it
Sisters are doing it for themselves
...come on girl
Sisters are doing it , doing it
Doing it, doing it, doing it, doing it
Sisters are doing it for themselves
Doing it, doing it, doing it, doing it
