Of all the versions of this song (Sam's, Otis', Al's, Billy's, and Luther's, etc.) this is my favorite. The extra stanza she adds as a preamble, "There's an old friend that I once heard say something that touched my heart ..." suggests to me that she is paying homage to Sam Cooke who died in 1964 (I'm sure others can confirm or refute that possibility), which is an element that is missing in the other versions, and elevates this version to a higher purpose: the telling of another person's story, testifying, as it were, about another person's struggles – something that carries with it a great responsibility. Of course, one would be hard-pressed to find anyone better than sister 'Retha to testify, and she bore that responsibility with impressive care, sincerity, and love. I also like how Aretha changes the lyric to be more positive -- the part about "He said, 'Good sister, I'd like to but I'm not able'" rather than the brother uncaringly turning the person down, as written in the original lyric. The aspect of the homage, and the positivity she adds to the otherwise – what seems to me to be a relatively – sad song, adds a nice element of contrast, but more importantly elevates the element of hope. This is also the line where she changes from telling the story in the third-person to telling it in the first-person, which makes the story her own, thus adding her own personal testimony to the song’s observation of the human condition.Aretha took Sam's song, lovingly brushed the dust off of it, repaired a few slight chips on it, gave it a good polish, and made sure it was sitting in its rightful place of honor. At the risk of making comparisons, there’s also something about Aretha's singing, phrasing, and general interpretation that I like better than the other versions, too. That’s just my personal preference though, and not a comment on the quality of other versions. I hate to say it, but Aretha’s version of this song is also one of the few songs that can get me teared up, too, mainly because of her elevation and treatment of the element of hope. And you know she means it, too. Lord love that woman; she sure can elevate a person’s soul with her singing.

The songs of Aretha from the 60's-70's are the best of the best in Gospel-Soul-Blues and Rock. This rendition is my favorite of Sam Cooke's last song, A Change is Going to Come. Amazingly Awesome! We all waiting....
