childish? that's funny coming from someone with the username "jordanluvzspongebob". They did brilliantly in 2012 and I can't wait what 2013 brings for my favourite band.

yea you got it. If I've visited quite a few places and met heaps of people from all over Australia and found that at least half (if not more) of them speak with an aussie accent, and there are over 20 million people in australia, over half of 20 million is definitely 'millions' of people. Basic logic. It really doesn't mean I have to have met every last person.

Im not calling you a bigot. Im saying that if people are judged by a particular assumption made about their origins in a job interview, then its bigotry. Works the other way though. Im in the hospitality industry, and aussie chefs are much sought after overseas, particularly europe, for their strong work ethic. of course its a generalisation and not always true though. But i dont think we can blame hard working aussie chefs for setting such high expectations for aussie chefs to come.

so let me get this straight, you have visited (quote): '...quite a few areas' and decided that, (quote): '...millions of people DO speak like that.' ?

When the hell did I say I had met millions of people? Do I have to have met 7 billion people to claim there are 7 billion people in the world? No, I don't think so. Millions of people DO speak like that, believe it or not. I've visited quite a few areas in Australia, and unless the people who didn't have an accent were hiding away, judging by what I saw, a huge percentage of Australians speak like that. That's where I got my 'millions' number from - definitely not 'unfounded' and 'unfair'

Thus, I would quite readily agree with you that I don't know much about Australia. If I thought about all that there is to know about Australia, and then thought about what I know about it, well there's certainly a huge contrast. I don't claim to know the much about Australia at all. I have the humility to accept that, you however have convinced yourself that you somehow understand it 'better' than I. Well that's just rubbish.

You know millions of people? wow. I can't compete with you, I've lived in Australia most of my life, but I can't say I've met millions of people. You certainly know more than me about Australia if you have, as you indirectly claim, met millions of people. I resent that you believe I don't know much about Australia, i think that's an unfair and unfounded claim, I do know that Australia is geographically big, culturally diverse, and in a constant state of flux.

You can help your own though. Unless you're asserting that i'm the bigot in this instance? I'm not bigoted, I'm all ears to a perspective that looks beyond the ego of the person who holds it. Unfortunately, your perspective is not of that nature.

cant help peoples bigotry.

I actually think it would be a good idea to learn at the very least awareness of the indigenous languages at school in Australia. I think that would be a really good thing. Learning about Indigenous cultures, languages, history, and stories i think is a really good idea.

So the brand of 'Australian-English' that you perpetuate may be very comfortable and useful for communicating around a barbecue in Toowoomba, but internationally, it perpetuates an idea of Australians as native English speakers with an insular and tribal dialect with many colloquialisms. It really depends on where you live, if you live in a country town, don't let my statements bother you, live out your life in colloquial peace, using your local language. I'm thinking more broadly than you are.

So we should adopt the aboriginal language? There are more than 27 indigenous languages in Australia, which one are you talking about? I work in Japan, I previously taught English. In the north east Asian region, sometimes Australian-English is perceived by companies/schools as being problematic because of the perception that it is too colloquial. This perception frustrates many Australians who are denied interviews because they are not Canadian, English, or American.

scottpastry

using that logic, australians should adopt the aboriginal language, the previously established language, as their native tongue. absurd. no one has a responsibility to speak a language that a majority speaks just to appease the masses. why are you projecting ignorance onto aussies who use an accent you dont like?

scottpastry

"You're still just referring to one Australian cultural group." never said i wasnt. but you claimed the accent is put on. pure projection. and you still havent explained why its an individuals responsibility to represent their country with their language?

Benjamin Coady

You make an assertion that I believe people have a responsibility. You are right. I think people should speak English in a way that can be understood by billions of people who are leaving behind their homelands and culture and language to learn the English language. It is the global language, yet upon arriving in Australia, many people find a very insular cultural group who have a code of speaking. They use English, but a type of English that is only understood by ignorant white Australians.

Benjamin Coady

You're still just referring to one Australian cultural group. It is an island of immigrants, there are many Australians who don't know what a 'cobber' or a 'cobba' is, and they don't use the term. There are those who do know the term but don't use it. "the 100s of 1000s of Aussies', Do you mean Queensland?

scottpastry

1. Cobba is a poorly spelled cobber. Cobber is a mate. But im pretty sure you already knew both those things. 2.Blinkered is a term used to describe ones narrow view on something. In your case, that Australians dont really talk like that, and that its put on. Tell that to the 100s of 1000s of Aussies who do talk like that. 3. See answer 2. Why do you think any one person has the responsibility to talk a certain way, or represent their country in a particular way?

Benjamin Coady

Mr Scottpastry, please enlighten me, and share with me your insights into the insular white Australian subculture by answering these questions: 1. What is a cobba? 2. What is the meaning of the adjective 'blinkered'? 3. How am I ignorant when your post is full of spelling errors? Spelling mistakes made on purpose just to show a cocky defiance to your british cultural heritage of which you resent and seek to distinguish yourself from by developing a cryptic dialect that breaks all of their rules.
