Archie Bell was indeed stationed in Vietnam when this tune reached number one on the Billboard charts - and had a tough time convincing his military buddies that it was him singing whenever this song played on Armed Forces Radio.Why did the lyrics state that they were from Houston, Texas? Since the assassination of President Kennedy happened in Dallas, Mr. Bell claimed to confront a lot of people who said something like "nothing good comes from Texas." The lyric was their way of saying, "we're from Texas, and we're good too."

Can anyone clarify if the following is true. Tighten Up was recorded while the band was just tuning up for a recording session. It wasn't an actual song, the guys just grooving for a sound check. It was then released as a b-side to Dog eat Dog, but DJs preferred and played Tighten Up instead. It was then released in its own right as an A side and became a massive hit. Great story if it is true!
