Johann Hegg sure can indeed.

No, you're right. Townsend does more screams than growls, and he kinda sounds like a frog, live. But, I've got ANOTHER vocalist who can growl like a boss! Johann Hegg, of Amon Amarth!

Honestly, I didn't think much of it. /watch?v=O1VcQMwDIcU /watch?v=BrNhKx7P9-U /watch?v=XQEzyjw0ndI (screams at 3:21) /watch?v=rsFZ2seYtWA (and honestly I haven't heard a scream that can match this one, at 1:32) I'm a fan of Townsend but I don't recall him growling but rather shouting (with a lot of effects distorting the sound when he does) and the screams sound weak live. His cleans are great and hes got a good tone. You can try and prove me wrong if you like (especially with live videos).

Well.."Growling doesn't have to be guttural. Most growls are just low octave grunting (i.e. from the throat, not the gut)." I'm trying to understand where you're coming from. Joe is a better growler because he can hardly growl but shouts. Kyo can guttural growl correctly but uses many styles of growling and many more singing and screaming, but this is worse because the "musical notes" are lower? I don't think this is going anywhere because you're letting favoritism get in the way.

Not the gut as in the stomach. Restricting breathing using your throat feels like it's coming straight from the diaphragm, hence from the gut. I like Kyo, I like his version as well, but I like Joe's better. Now, you're just making a straw man argument. And the "musical notes bullshit"? It's called singing. And no, Slipknot is not better because they simply sing-shout. You're honestly comparing Gojira to Slipknot? Well, then, I can safely say that this discussion is going nowhere.

So are you saying that these guttural vocals (Chuck Schuldiner) are produced in their gut?! I must say all my gut really does is digest the food and none of the sort produce vocal chords. He doesn't just growl though does he? I can say Joe just shouts /watch?v=lljzVaKHxoQ You are talking about how Kyo is a shit growler in comparison because you don't like his tone. You may as well say how the Slipknot singer is better because there is this "musical notes" bullshit. To me they're just shouting

...continuing I prefer the tone of James LaBrie's clean vocals to many vocalists, but I definitely don't rate his vocal abilities too highly nor would I say someone like Marc Hudson is shit because his tone sounds very "meh" to me. Lol, what?... Kyo just growls?... Rather than me posting more comments than necessary I suggest you watch this- /watch?v=nDLH-_WprS8 The power, emotion and meaning behind these growls are incomparable imo. Not including all these other variations of vocals used.

I don't think any growls are from the gut mate, unless you want to classify hunger growls as a technique for vocals. I think you mean diaphragm. Guttural vocals doesn't imply it is produced in your gut. From the few songs I've heard from Joe I can tell you that your comment would make more sense as "Joe's growls are shit in comparison but nonetheless I still prefer the sound of his growls". ----------

Growling doesn't have to be guttural. Most growls are just low octave grunting (i.e. from the throat, not the gut). The only guttural vocalists I know of are Chuck Schuldiner of Death and Jeff Becarra of Possessed, and comparing them to people like Dave Vincent or Corpsefinder Fisher is again like comparing the trumpet to the cornet. Very different sounds. The reason I say Kyo's are shit in comparison is because Joseph can carry a musical tone with his screams (scream singing. Kyo just growls.

That's what I'm trying to say I mainly hear shouting (that can be seen in Divine Heresy, Slayer, Machine Head etc) with a mild hint of growling. Growling is guttural vocals so this is what I would like to hear seeing as you say Kyo is shit in comparison. Good growling = /watch?v=qpuYs1DE97k

The entirety of L'Enfant Savauge. I suggest the tracks Explosia and the title track. Also, Tom Araya doesn't growl. If you know anything about Slayer, you'd know that they've always been inspired by the shouted/screaming vocals in punk rock. And Joseph doesn't just do guttural vocals, as you'll see if you listen to the aforementioned Gojira tracks.

Point me in the direction of the good growls because from what I hear here and the few Gojira songs I listen to there really isn't much growls or any that I'd call half decent. Sounds more like Slayers' 'God hates us all' album with some somewhat amateur growling that could also be found in bands such as Divine Heresy. Not hating on the vocals that I have heard as he has a great tone and a nice thrash metal feel to them, but gutturals?... hardly even there.
