Catherine Annette Hanshaw was born in New York in 1901. Lovable and sweet was more than just a song where Annette was concerned - she lived her life that way. Her manager, Herman "Wally" Rose always had the best talent available to accompany Annette - Jack Teagarden, Morton Downey, Miff Mole, Eddie Lang, Joe Venute, Phil Napolean, Red Nichols, Adrian Rollini, Benny Goodman, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey - the A list of white jazz musicians. In 1929, Annette and Wally were married and remained so until his death in 1954.

To increase market share, her songs were released under the names Patsy Young, Dot Dare, Gay Ellis, Marion Lee, Betty Lloyd, Janet Shaw, Frances Hopwood, Ethel Bingham and Leila Sanford-but trade publications revealed the various names to the public so everyone knew who the real artist was. She appeared on the Camel Caravan, Maxwell House Showboat, Van Heusen Hour, and Rexall Magic Magic Hour to name but a few. She was the Personality Girl with her trademark "That's All" at the end of most of her recordings. The New York Times called her one of the most prolific recording artists of the 20s-30s. Although she was elected America's most popular female singer in a nationwide Radioland poll, she is all but unknown today. Thanks to Preston Meeks for some of the information about Annette. Lovable and Sweet from the motion picture Street Girl, Okeh, NY, 8-29-29.

Annette Hanshaw was poised, elegant, sophisticated, and cute. You rarely see English girls like this anymore, now they wear jeans and stare at their mobile phones and listen to rap through earphones. Yes, I know Annette Hanshaw was American, but she's of English ancestry and there used to be more girls like her.

Genial!

I'm a great fan of Annette's - she's far and away my favourite singer - but I can't help feeling that some of her fans tend to overstate her popularity, as if it is in some way an insult to Annette that Ruth Etting was more popular at the time when they were both recording. Yes Annette was a prolific recorder, but almost all of her work was released on cheap labels, and comprised cover versions of songs popularised by others artists such as Ruth Etting, Helen Kane, Fanny Brice, Ethel Waters etc. etc, Though chart positions in that era are open to some debate, the MVF website credits Annette with only 5 top 100 records. By way of comparison, it credits Ruth Etting with 62, of which 38 are listed as top ten hits. As for the Radioland Poll of 1935, which is sometimes pointed to as definitive proof of Annette's popularity, well I'm afraid that such polls have over the years shown themselves to be easily manipulated either by diehard fans or by backers of a particular artist. The total vote for the poll could not have been very large since Annette topped it with less than 5000 votes. It is interesting - and perhaps surprising - that the top male singer in the same poll was Lanny Ross, but then perhaps it is not so surprising when one sees that the top radio show was Maxwell House Showboat, which featured both Annette and Lanny. Coincidence ....? Personally, I think Annette's relaxed delivery probably held her back at a time when most leading female singers had more affected, even histrionic, styles. For most modern listeners it is often difficult to understand the popularity of a singer like Fanny Brice and this is true to a lesser extent of many others including Helen Kane, Lee Morse and even Ruth Etting. The same is true for many of the male singers of the era. Inevitably, Annette herself strayed into this territory in some of her recordings, but fortunately was allowed to use her own relaxed style, particularly after 1928. It was also fortunate that in covering so many songs of the period, she recorded versions of some the great popular songs which, like her delivery, have stood the test of time. Add a roster of great studio musicians and the result can sound magical almost 90 years later.

You couldn't go wrong with either one. Careful with that Adolph dude, there were 15 attempts on his life~all failed. Its like God wanted him to live to punish the world. Wouln't be the fist time. The Jews were sent to capitivity in Egypt, still didn't learn and were sent off to Babylon.

I am possibly 2 years away from perfecting my time travel machine I'm not sure yet whether to visit Louise Brooks the silent actress while she's taking a bath or annette and asking her to sing a few modern songs while I record her. I also plan to shoot Adolph Hitler, I may be able to take a passenger.
