“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

Marshall made the correct decision is turning the songs up and octave to force Anna to sing soprano. It suits her well, gives her a very distinctive and beautiful voice. Especially that last e flat belt on palace, man that was great. Not that Anna isn't good in her normal vocal register, but I think making her sing soprano drove home that she was a princess. On a side note, Sondheim also made a great decision in using the fact that she was emotionally abused almost her whole childhood and turning that into indecisiveness, trust issues, and choice-making issues.

While I prefer this song in the soprano voice like Kim did I think Anna did an incredible job especially the end with belting that high note.

As much as I appreciate what Anna Kendrick has said, about how great is was to work directly with Stephen Sondheim, revising the lyrics... and how it was "...really exciting to realize that the material was still living and breathing and that I got to be a part..." ... and I can appreciate that some things might have needed improvement, to fit with film close-ups, or to work with nuances of how they'd setup the situation a little differently... (I'm looking for ways to cut them a break, here)... ... honestly, I like the original lyrics a LOT better. And I actually have PURPOSEFUL reasons: In the original, she says so much in 2nd person: "... you know what your decision is, which is not to decide... and you've learned something new..." The tone of that, and the effect of that, is to present her as the UNIVERSAL girl, (or boy), struggling with what we ALL struggle with, when about to date what seems like a perfect person (don't you think almost ALL of us have had that thought, at some point: "they might be the perfect person"?): Am I being myself? Do I want to try to look good, or to just be myself? If I'm "trying", do they really see "ME"? If their interest is based on looking good -- based on what I'm really NOT -- then do I even WANT this? If I don't know what I want, then who am I anyway? (Or, If their interest is based on a fantasy -- that *I* might be *their* perfect person -- then, do they really see me?... and if not, do I really WANT this? And again, if I don't know what I want, then who am I anyway?...........) And the universality of saying it in 2nd person ("you") has it be our own thoughts, that are COMEDY when said out loud.
