Somewhere Along The Line - European Tour, Part Two

Directed By Emma Nathan

"I love the desperation in this song- the original by TV On The Radio is relentless, and terrifying. I find the idea of losing control of oneself very provocative, and the way this idea is explored in Wolf like Me (the protagonist is turning into a werewolf) is humorous but dangerously effective. In my version I wanted to imagine the change is almost happening in slow motion- that there is no fight anymore, but a dreamlike embrace of the inevitable. I wanted the song to feel like a hypnotic prayer. I chose to omit the last verse of the original, and instead allow the guitar to take over, at the point where all control is lost!

This performance of Wolf Like Me was recorded at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels on the 3rd of October 2011. This video also includes tour footage from Berlin, Stockholm, Finland, Amsterdam, Oslo and Rennes." Anna Calvi, 2011

Like it better than the original. And I'll tell you why. It has everything I look for in Calvi's music. Sinister, Dark, Sensual, Visual, Cinematic. If you consider the song's concept is about a transformation into werewolf, this version get's the message across much better for me. I think the guitar is key in this. It's not noise. It's not 3/4 chords at 140 rpm. It howls. And while doing so, goes from fear/loss of control to despair/ resignation. The guitar part itself tells the story. That's another wonderful aspect of Calvi's music.

Absolute garbage compared to the original.

Of course the original is always better, but I am glad that someone honors TV on the Radio with a cover. That's basically what one artist is doing when they cover another artist's music, honoring them. Sure this isn't the same as the original, but sometimes it's nice to mix it up a bit. There are no rules for covering music.

This sucks. Out-of-tune, lacks energy. The original is miles better.
