Isn't it amazing that her speaking voice (here at least) is quiet and girlish... shy a reserved... but when she sings, its WHAMM!!! So powerful. Very kool.

Aretha was of course, the premier female soul singer of her day, or for all time, for that matter (I'm speaking of the rock era). There were some songs that she could cover and do a better job on, but sometimes she overdid it. She did Dionne Warwick's "Say A Little Prayer" and turned it into a classic. She did a soulful job on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and a great version of Lulu's "Oh Me Oh My". But in my opinion, this song, originally done by Glen Campbell, is a haunting, reflective song, singing of love and an understanding between a man and a woman that she's always going to be there for him no matter where he is or what he's doing. Aretha turned it into a stomp-your-feet and clap-your-hands gospel song, and it didn't fit. You could barely pick out the melody. I'm African American and not every soul song needs to have a gospel flavor to it. This is one of my favorite songs ever and I could barely understand the lyrics, let alone the melody. But I still love ya, 'Retha. :)

Echoing the general sentiment, I love that Andy's legacy includes having *everyone* on that show, showcasing and enjoying every minute from every different talent, all thru the 60s and early 70s.

Two people who could REALLY SING. They, and others like them, had a thing called TALENT, not to mention "real" music. I feel badly for people who weren't around to experience all the REAL talent and music of those times--the 40's, 50's, 60's and even a good chunk of the 70's. I doubt it will ever be repeated in today's world. For sure, we've lost something vitally important !
