That penultimate sentence is a bit of a contradiction. Is it an absolute that you if you're protestant then you are a Monarchist? Who said such a rule was absolute?

if James Connolly was alive today,,he would weep at the way the working people are burdened by debt , transferred from banks and speculators to the ordinary people , he would call for a revolution ,up the irish citizen army ,

Hibs to my mind are a Scottish club. Same as Dundee Utd (formerly Dundee Hibernians). Celtic are a different proposition because of the West of Scotland mentality. And, Rangers of course. All appalling if you ask me.

No. Before he set sail for Ireland he was involved and indeed was secretary of the Scottish Socialist Federation and was also involved with the Independent Labour Party founded by Keir Hardie. So, to claim him as purely one of Ireland's is a bit disingenous/ignorant at best. Now, to our shame, we haven't commemorated him as properly as we should have. There is a plaque outside his house in the Cowgate part of Edinburgh. That along with many other things shall be corrected post Autumn 2014! ;-)

If you remove the English army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. England would still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs - James Connolly

@squirell1952 Connolly considered himself Irish. On religion, he said, "Though I have usually posed as a Catholic, I have not done my duty for 15 years, and have not the slightest tincture of faith left."

@rayspecial Connolly realised that Ireland must cut political ties with Britain to gain rightful social freedoms, but that partition would be detrimental to the labour movement as it would compound old divisions & split the working class (which it subsequently did of course). Opposition to home rule was closely tied into monetary interests too. Protestants were shaped into defenders of elitist interests through divide & rule thus unionism ended up representing the antithesis of socialist ideals.

@seonidh Yes, he was Edinburgh born & learned his Socialism on the "Red Clyde" as apprentice to THEE John MacLean! He was never a bigot & worked tirelessly to stop worker expolitation in Belfast, Glasgow & Liverpool, never caring if it were taig or prod worker he helped!!! Without peer in Irish/all history! Jim Connolly, a real Irish/ Scottish hero!
