Just discovered him today. What the world has been missing. A singer who can actually sing.

"Lush Life" was written by Billy Strayhorn, not Andy Bey. Billy Strayhorn wrote both the music and the lyrics at the age of 16 and brought the composition to Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington in the late 1930's, and it is said that Mr. Ellington hired Mr. Strayhorn on the spot, thus beginning a lifetime musical partnership of the highest order. It's unimaginable that a teenager could have had such a profound understanding of an aging heartbroken barfly in a wearily sophisticated world of drink and despair, as delineated in the song's lyrics. Andy Bey's is my favorite rendition of the song (he is both playing piano and singing), and he's one of my two favorite living male vocalists, the other being the great Los Angeles ecstatic singer Dwight Trible. Please check him out too!

AND, very difficult to scat Lush Life. I recorded this tune on my debut CD and have sung it onstage many a Saturday night. I can't think of anyone else who has scatted it...

I agree, Will. The way Andy Bey has been ignored over the years is almost a felony...

It is absolutely amazing that a man who can sing this well is relegated to virtual obscurity while the Justins and the like are famous and wealthy beyond measure.
