@idkwhattonamemyself I only heard/saw one minor chord of the three he played. For a simple, melancholic song about feeling companionless, I think the repetition of the minor works fairly well, like an endless, lonely road in someone's life. I doubt Andrew Bird is concerned with being cool. I believe he's feeling the power of Son House's lyrics, similar to the way Jack White plays when he covers "Death Letter" or any song for that matter. Bird is cool in his own right without need for show.
