AMY

Elton John

Honky Chateau (1972)

Tread on my face if you like little lady

Turn me inside out if you have to baby

But don't you cross me off your list

I am young and I ain't never been kissed

Never been kissed by a lady called Amy

You're far out, you're fab and insane

A woman of the world, it's quite plain

My dad told me Amy's your name

Said he'd break my neck if I played your game

But he can bust my neck `cause I love you all the same

Amy I know you don't have to show your affection

`Cause the big boys like you and to you I'm an infection

So if you don't want me around

I think I'll run along and drown

You can't want this bum in town Amy

I'm beaten on the streets `cause I loves you

I watch you go to work in the summer

I don't whistle at you down the street

I would if I could but I can't whistle you see

Amy I may not be James Dean

Amy I may not be nineteen

And I may still be in romper boots and jeans

But Amy you're the girl that wrecks my dreams

words before the songs... never takes elton more than an hour to write a song. if it does he throws the lyric out. to see his genius way of writing look up the flood song the oven manual song and the insider actors studio end

Have you ever heard Don't Shoot Me? That album is every bit as good as this one. Maybe even a little bit better.

I love Taupin's lyrics, they are so in your face, original, and insightful. Just damn unique. Great stuff.

What a BRILLIANT observation!!! I play and sing most ALL of Elton's Hits as both a pianist and singer/songwriter, and I can tell you that this is the absolute truth! He was NEVER greater or more powerful or creative than this period here, between 1970-1975!!! JON BOND

About once or twice a year for the last 40 years I've got this sound stuck in my head all day, I love it, beats the shit out of getting Humming Bird by Seals and Crofts stuck in there.

As brilliant as Elton's music is, Bernie's lyrics are top notch!

From Tumbleweed Connection to Yellow Brick Road was an absolutely amazing period of creativity for Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Then drugs started to change things. But, even though he turned out hits and continued to write brilliantly(e.g. the Broadway success of Billy Eliot) afterwards this is the period when his creative flame burned the brightest.
