Amorphis was/is a Finnish Death metal band formed in 1990, by a few ex-members of another Death metal group :Abhorrence, The band recorded the demo "Disment of Soul" in 1991, and got immediately signed to Relapse ( greatly due to the PR made by Abhorrence ). a single and and their first full-length "Karelian Isthmus" was released in 1992. The album was recorded in 1992 in Sunlight Studios of Stockholm and with assistance of Tomas Skogsberg. The songs recorded in 1991 in Helsinki were featured on the "Privilege of Evil" EP released in 1993 ( the EP was originally ment to release as a split-album with Incantation but due to some problems, Incantation's side wasn't released until 2008 ). The second album "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" released in 1994 represented the new musical world of Amorphis, with more extensive use of keyboards, melody and folk music influenced guitar riffs. In 1995, all the rest of the songs ,that didn't fit on the full-length ,were released on "Black Winter Day" EP . "Tales from the Thousand lakes" has also been considered one of the founding stones of Melodic Death Metal. The lyrical themes of the band also changed during the "Tales . . ." album, and the songs have been inspired by the tales of Finnish epic Kalevala ever since. In 1996 released third album of the band "Elegy" had fallen even deeper to progressive experimenting both in guitars and keyboards and the music had more folk tendencies.

This is from their "Privilege of Evil" EP of 1993

Lyrics :

Your fear, your flesh

Cruel horror, your fate

Cursed shroud, your void

Dust to dust, you're feel harm

In your eyes we shall fall

Torture of death

Punishes to life shame of chaos

Awaking them its bound of chaos

Locked in pain your flesh

Tearing horror of pain

We arise, rise in tomb

To terror in your eyes

Old Amorphis is simply brilliant. Can't say the same for their present day creations.

I love the old Amorphis. But i have to admit the new stuff is good to get stoned to.

Argh, if they could have at least done one album that sounded like this EP,

Wow definitely the best Amorphis album by far. I really wish The Karelian Isthmus had this type of production sound.

@Mahalist I don't think that you can really properly compare Tales from the Thousand Lakes to this EP. The comparison to Karelian works, since they're both straight-up death metal focused on brutality, whereas Tales is when they started moving in a more melodic direction, doing away with the grind influences in favor of doom and melodeath influence

@XysmicExecration sure, i'll bite that, i was drinking when i made that comment so you know how it is, this music gets you going after a few cases of beer, vodka, fortified wine...etc I was feeling passionate that night about how they changed their sound in follwoing albums. It just depends on what album you got introduced to 1st.

@OugaBoogaShockwave What Mahalist ment was that "Privilege of Evil" and old Amorphis were the cornerstones of the Finnish Death metal scene back in the early 90s, which innovated many of the further and the lesser names of the scene back in the days. Ofcourse good music has no borders such as nationality, but I see no harm of using nationality or place of origin as an adjective to categorize some music : Stockholm Death, Gothenburger , Teutonic Thrash, Seattle sound ( grunge ).

This is fucking awesome. While I like their "newer" stuff (the first that I heard from them, honestly), this is superior, in my opinion.

Well, timo mixed around 200 demos before stratovarius got anywhere and he is still working on studio as producer or what ever. So he has skills to do this kind of work

This is the REAL sound of Amorphis!

Hell's Yeah \m/ It is quite absurd, that Timo Tolkki, the guitarist of a relatively cheesy power metal band, was mixing this.
