That's really interesting. I have always thought of AFP as someone with astounding amounts of self esteem. It is interesting the idea that she is sometimes not so sure of herself.

I am pretty sure that it's about herself, in fact. She said once that she's always identified with the “coffee scene in ‘Moscow on the Hudsons’”, where a character is so overwhelmed by the options at a supermarket that he breaks down and cries (“I just want some coffee…!”). The “hateful” middle-8 (“murderous monosyllabic moron with no sense of purpose, working on your songs all night to justify your worthlessness”) is what she thinks when her self-doubt kicks in. This is my impression.

It can be seen in different ways: mostly it talks about focusing on all the possible future «yous» that you won't ever be instead of focusing on who you are and on the one person you're going to be able to be. It's about letting all that worry go, choosing one thing and running with it fearlessly. Because nobody is ever going to see all the things you could have done, what you do with awhat yoyu have and with the choices you make is all that's “real”.

That was the first thought in my mind too.

I'm not sure if this is right, but I feel like she's talking about her self in the song, but I'm not sure. I'd love to hear what your interpretation is though c:

I guess its safe to say that whoever she wrote this song about is not a favorite person in her life.

Seriously? I think it's pretty clear, mostly thanks to the middle 8. But I didn't get half of it the first time, and even right now I just noticed another way in which some parts of it make sense. I still realize things about the lyrics in the foirst Dresden Dolls album now years after memorizing it, though. <3 Because Amanda is a great songwriter.
