They polled the remaining great American composers in 1964 on what's the greatest American song, and, yep, this won.

Surely you people realise that this is the ORIGINAL version, which I remember as a 'nipper' in England at the end of WW!!. It was a song for the times and, here, it is sung by singers of the times. To view it in the idiom of today's presenters is absurd. Those that recall the early days of the BBC Television, as I do, will know that, then, under Lord Reith, the News was read by men in dinner jackets and by ladies in full evening dress plus long gloves. If we saw that on the news on TV today all that would appear ridiculous in our eyes. By the way, in the early days of BBC radio, Lord Reith insisted that only men should read the news and had to wear dinner jackets in the sound studio.

Glorious! The way this lovely tune was originally scored.

Jerome Kern was certainly a brilliant and talented songwriter. Although this song is a beautiful song, for some reason the Broadway show "Very Warm for May" supposedly was a "turkey" and had a very short run on Broadway. ( The version by Artie Shaw and Helen Forrest is much more pleasing.)

Don't get me wrong, I know it takes a roof skill and training to sing in this style... I just don't care for the 12 metric tons of vibrato in the voices, especially with words. Eh...Great music, but don't judge someone as 'lacking taste' or 'musically unrefined/educated' just because they don't like the warble...

It's the arrangement and conducting which make this performance truly shine ~ both bythe brilliant John McGlinn, for whose presence Heaven itself is now blessed ...

Magic voices, beautifull.

Those "operatic" voices of Kaye and Luker just kill the song for me -- and I don't mean that in a good way. It's really all wrong and render the beautiful song unrecognizable. I bet Kern was turning in his grave.
