All people that on earth do dwell

Choir of King's College Cambridge

From the album "Best Loved Hymns" EMI Classics 2001

Lyrics - William Kethe

Tune - Louis Bourgeois

Lyrics:

All people that on earth do dwell,

Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.

Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell;

Come ye before Him and rejoice.

The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;

Without our aid He did us make;

We are His folk, He doth us feed,

And for His sheep He doth us take.

O enter then His gates with praise;

Approach with joy His courts unto;

Praise, laud, and bless His Name always,

For it is seemly so to do.

For why? the Lord our God is good;

His mercy is for ever sure;

His truth at all times firmly stood,

And shall from age to age endure.

To Father, Son and Holy Ghost,

The God Whom Heaven and earth adore,

From men and from the angel host

Be praise and glory evermore.

It is not a hymn it is a Psalm.

Can we get an amen? Southern Baptist here. Just had to say it! Beautiful piece.

This version is totally lacking in joy and spontaneity; it is ponderous and leaden and over thought. And I'm not coming here just to slag off, it's just that I heard this beautiful old hymn on Radio 4 this morning and wanted to post it on Facebook and thought King's take on it should be mega.Instead they just sound bored at their own talent.

If you want to believe in Gautr, that's fine, but you should probably know exactly what you're talking about. G.O.D. is a recent spelling in English. G.A.U.T.R. is earlier. G.O.T.T. is modern German. Where do you think this name comes from?

There is only one I shall bend my knee before. It is God and God alone.

The 'bent' note at 3.07. (Sorry I'm not musical so don't know the correct term.) Sheer perfection.

Some of the chord progressions in this hymn bring a tear to my eye. VERY moving and grand.

I love this piece. I think that this actual arrangement was commissioned for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
