Who does a better version, Alison Moyet or Trijntje Oosterhuis?

This is my favourite version of the song. It gets more and more powerful as it goes on.

A contralto can handle these notes just fine.

Thanks for the correction. To bring them back to their senses, the faith. [The Church, be it Old, or New, Testament, is often referred to in the Bible as a women, or a virgin women. Once, in the book of Revelation, it is virgin men (Rev. 14:4).]

We can look for happy endings... in other fields, on other topics.

Yes, that's another point. I think you may be right after all... Perhaps best sung by a man... Though all of us, frankly, need strength and assistance to win the ultimate victories. Though we can win battles, perhaps very many, the victory is God's. So, with this thought, I believe both a man, or a woman, can sing this song (provided the appropriate lyrics, and genders, used).

It's men who need strength from God, women can resort to the strength of a man and it's also more socially accepted for a woman to endulge in a victim role.

Yes, good point. But the lyrics and general meaning of the song suites a female singer. Btw, the prophets of old Israel would refer to the people often, as a lady, or worse, as a strumpet. (See Jeremiah) He would insult them, as to waken them, to bring them back.

The melody of this songs spans such a range that a female vocalist will end up singing a lot of low notes, hence it suits a male singer better.

There are frankly so many fine versions of this song; it's odd. Check out Elvis Costello's version with BB... *but there were more than one the two did togther*. "A Perfect Night" or some such...(!) available for viewing on Y.T.

I liked the heavyness in Ms. Moyet's voice: I thought it is perfectly suited for the song... Have you listened to Elvis Costello performing it with Burt Bacharach? That was something. But how do you like Trijnte Oosterhuis's version, btw?

Although I really Moyet on other songs ... I believe this song was much better served by Vigard. This song is full of angst and the heavy vibrato Moyet is putting on this takes away from the power of the lyrics and makes it sound like she's simply singing a song without feeling any of the emotion.. Both Costello and Vigard understand what the song is about and captured the emotion of the song perfectly.

I believe, if I were to choose a favorite version, I would go with this wonderful, passionate version by Alison Moyet. My favorite of the 'female versions', iyw. ("God Give Me Strength" is best sung, imo, by a female voice). Yet, it is undeniably true that Elvis Costello gave a remarkably powerful rendition of this song with B. B. Even haunting I might add, and a version in its strength that will match Alison's beauty.
