I know Layne is Layne, he's just the best... because it's fucking Layne Staley, okay? but you have to admit that William is doing really great job. I really like him and I hope I'll see Alice in Chains live this summer in my country.

Layne Rigby

I remember seeing clips of Chains throughout 2006 for the first time and hating DuVall, wasn't til I gave their new album this year ago that I appreciated his vocals and saw them on Kimmel/Rock am ring this year and saw how much he'd improved the vocals on Man in the Box. Saw them in London last week and to be fair, it isn't until you see them live that you really get to appreciate what they're doing. Layne's shoes are incredibly big ones to fill and DuVall is an amazing singer live, really gets the crowd going and sounds great too. It's not like he's trying to better Layne, the old songs are played as a tribute to Layne and the fans.

William DuVall has plenty of strengths and I think he is an excellent singer--he doesn't try to be Staley and he does amazing at what he does. That being said, I don't think this sing is really for him. It does not play to his strengths as a vocalist (nor was it meant too, obviously, at the time). However, watch him sing "Kashmir" and you'll rethink your decision about him instantaneously.

Depends. Cornell definitely HAD a far superior range and a much better tone, with much better control. Cornell was the Steve Perry of heavy metal. A much better analogy would be Cornell = Coverdale, Staley = Plant. People like Plant, but his control was laughable, pitch was considerably off quite frequently, etc.. etc.. Influential? Yes, but in terms of pure vocal ability, Coverale was always better. This is the same with Cornell and Staley.

Layne sang in a way that was strong, beautiful, gritty, depressed, gloomy, hopeful, and powerful all at once, in an effortless way. This dude is up there really trying hard and still isn't even coming close. Layne is a once in a lifetime singer.

Layne did. If he's no longer living, I rather stay stuck in time and and put my Facelift to play. I'm happier this way.

Who does? Cobain don't. Cornell don't. Weiland don't. Vedder don't. The list goes on dude. Nobody's got nothin in Staley. Move on.

one of the greatest ROCK singers ever. I have heard very few that have his range or power.

You can never replace staley but this is what staley would of wanted.

Layne is hard to replace. If Chris Cornell had not rejoined Soundgarden I would he would have been there best bet. Infact I think Chris is the better singer, but he cant sing with the same emotion that Layne could which might be a problem.

totally agree, he has a decent voice and he sings it with much respect but he can't hit the high notes right like Layne could. Layne Staley has no equal.

I'll concede that he wasn't perfect technically speaking, but he put a lot of heart..."Would" must be one of their most difficult songs to sing.

Phil Anselmo performing "Would?" with AiC was God awful. He NEVER got on track with the song. Definitely the worst out of all the AiC guest singers.

He's so nasally. Sounds more like whining than singing when he tries to hit the high notes...

I am not saying hes bad, I mean he has a decent voice. But he is just so inferior to Layne (which I dont blame him for, Layne was one of the greatest singers ever) that I cant help to want and go listen to a live version with Layne's vocals. Listen to how much hes strugling to hit those notes...WHY did Layne have to die?

Jesus Christ! Duvall does this song perfect! He actually sounds like a man in a box buried in shit singing!

He's also playing "rhythm guitar". Hes just becoming another Sammy Hagar.
