what I liked about this version is that he rearranged it so that there's a bridge between the 2nd and last verse. In a sense, if a singer does that, it provides the song some time to build up to a much more intense last verse that serves the purpose as the climax of the song/performance. Although he didn't take it down that road, by putting a bridge there opens up so much more possibilities to a much more brilliant performance, instead of the regular Roberta Flack dynamics that everyone is following.

I don't really know how anyone can make comparisons to Alfie's version to what someone else did. Roberta Flack made it popular, but that doesn't mean that she has it down as the definitive version not does Gordon Lightfoot or George Michael. Every person who does the song puts their own personality and style into it.
