Now that Splean is one step away from its 20th anniversary, it can be claimed with confidence that this Petersburg collective was one of the brightest rock groups of the 1990s. In just a few years, Alexander Vasiliev achieved a level of popularity that placed him on the same level as the heroes of the previous, late-Soviet, generation, thereby refuting the hypothesis that the fall of the Iron Curtain in Russia signaled the end of the epoch of the Russian rock star. Nothing has changed since then -- Splean remains to this day one of the greatest Russian rock groups, one whose songs have become leitmotifs for more than one generation of post-Soviet Russian history.

What is the key to their popularity? Perhaps to a certain degree it's the group's ability to always sound modern and relevant, perhaps it's the ever-surprising songs of Alexander Vasiliev, who could easily be dubbed a brilliant modern poet, or perhaps it's the magic of their live performances. More likely, beyond all of the above, their success resides in the eternal human yearning for beauty, of which there is so little in the world around us and so much within Splean's artistry.

В преддверии 20-летия группы Сплин можно с уверенностью утверждать, что этот петербургский коллектив -- одна из самых ярких групп 90-х. Опровергая тезис о том, что с падением железного занавеса в России эпоха звезд прошла, Александр Васильев за несколько лет добился уровня популярности, поставившего его на одну ступень с героями предыдущих десятилетий. Сплин и по ныне остается группой первой величины, чьи песни стали лейтмотивом новейшей российской истории.

Секрет популярности группы в умении всегда звучать современно и актуально. Но в первую очередь в удивительной красоте песен Александра Васильева, которого можно без сомнений можно назвать гениальным поэтом современности.
