Used to watch this amazing band at the Bell in Maidenhead with my late father in circa 1975 - 1978. Brilliant. Fred Hunt on piano and Lennie Hastings on drums.....Alex could tell a few jokes as well.....great great band.

Does anybody remember Rick Shaw and his hot Coolies. Great trad jazz Sunday evenings at Ally Pally mid to late seventies? Happy days.

My uncle, Art Sanders, used to run the Wood Green Jazz Club where I regularly attended the Sunday night sessions. The Alex Welsh band was a great favourite of mine along wuth my very favourite, Fredddie Randall. But then the core of Alex's band was ex Randall musicians. Two terrific English bands. RIP Alex & Freddie.

....and we used to dance (skip-jive, I remember) to them at The Downs Hotel, Hassocks, in 63-64, when Lennie Hastings was going through his aooooiyah aoooeeeyaaaaagh phase at the end of his drum solo. My favourite was Exactly Like You.

Yeah, a truly great band. Roy Crimmins was really good but Roy Williams was sensational! I followed the band for many years - St Albans jazz club etc., and even played their intevals at Osterley Jazz Club with my band the Mike Graham JB. Roy Williams is my absolute trombone hero and I have always tried to use his style as the basis for my own. I think we are both getting a bit long in the tooth these days but I am still getting there. 'Onya Roy!

Roy Williams is an amazing trombone player, one of the very best ever. Tremendous melodic improvisational style.

Good to see dear old Alex and the band again and especially Johnny Barnes who, I believe, has recently suffered a stroke. Such a great band and sadly missed.
