I do not like this version, because the original version from 1980, had electric piano than mandolin than the electric piano version. Mandolin is OK for songs by Ricky Skaggs, but not the original by Merle Haggard.

Thank you so much for posting this song on youtube. I am a huge fan of this song. Alan Jackson does an amazing job covering this song and i really appreciate good talented music artists. There are so many people out there that say they are country when really they are not. Sad but true.

Sonny Throkmorton was the writer, it was a fabulous song that I first saw Merle perform on Austin City Limits although havent found that version on youtube yet, Not everyone can pull off covers of songs, especially of Merle Haggarts, but Alan Jackson does a fabulous job on this tune, he doesnt over sing it, keeps the beauty of it there and I love the Mandolin in it. Damn good reproduction by a great performer!

I don't judge in terms of better or worse. They're both good and easy to listen to, and that's good enough for me. They both represent real country music, unlike most of the cookie cutter pop bullshit that's played on the radio today.

Alan does a good job, but Hag is better. Love Alan to though. He has many awesome songs too, as well as Merle has his own. Love them both.

I love Merle 10x more than Alan...but I will admit this is beautifully sung. You can tell when the Hag sings it is his song. He wrote it and it sounds like a man reflecting on his life's experiences. Alan's version is better to listen to but is less gritty. I love both but for different reasons.
