True ~ Blues begat Rock ~ Rock begat Metal (that is the short version). Of course you could go into all of the rockabilly, bluegrass, Delta vs. Chicago blues scenarios till eternity. I also remember Roy Buchanan saying that the first person he ever saw use a rock barre cord was Scotty Moore (pre Elvis era).
