Alabama Shakes performing You Ain't Alone live at Metro Theatre in Sydney on 17 January 2013

Formed in Athens, Alabama in 2009, Brittany Howard and her band's fierce, soul-infused brand of rock n' roll has seen a meteoric rise to the top. In October 2011, Alabama Shakes gave a performance at the CMJ Festival in New York City that earned a glowing review from the New York Times describing the band as "a thunderbolt dressed in bluejeans," with music that's "aching when it's slow and growling and whooping when it's fast." NPR named them one of the best bands of 2011, while MTV called them one of the top bands to look for in 2012.

With expectations at fever pitch, ALABAMA SHAKES delivered their debut album Boys & Girls and with it marked the arrival of a major new rock and roll band. Along with their explosive first single, "Hold On", it was their soulful live show that had everyone talking, with The Telegraph saying "They can work up a booty-shaking, garage-rocking stomp or take it down to a slinky, sensuous, heartcrushing whisper and it is all achieved with nuance and understatement."

Howard has a powerful stage presence that has Consequence of Sound proclaiming "Like a Southern preacher, she wagged her finger and strutted across the small stage while belting out her signature soul-drenched howl that falls somewhere between Howlin' Wolf and Janis Joplin."

Everyone says a comparison to Janis. As far as emotion and enthusiasm I see a lot ofJoe Cocker in Brittany. Either way this is empirical evidence that amazing music is still being produced. Watching this band perform literally gets me emotional. This is what music is about. Really looking forward to the show at the Mann in philly in September.

#Queen! ...love me some Alabama Shakes. Brittany exudes pure, raw passion. Just imagine how great she will be when she gets some mileage. Legend in the making ;-))

I really want to like this band but I've listened to most of their stuff & they've got no songs. A voice like that needs great material & they just don't have it.

Only other time I was brought to tears by the music being so incredibly touching was when I heard Floyds "wish you were" album for the first time. Well done Alabama shakes for keeping music alive and well.

I overheard someone say that there is no feeling, no sole, no passion in today's music...and to the most part I agree! But then there is this force of nature, Britney is an amazing performer, pure emotional energy, something that you don't only hear, but feel deep in your sole....and that is what makes great music!
