I heard that song once a million years ago; once, but I got it or most of it. I've been looking for it ever since and found it tonight. I'll play it over and over. My father was in the German air force (Luftwaffe) ground crew during WWII in the Soviet invasion, made it back to Germany and surrendered to the US Army. My grandfather was a civilian German scientist and forced to labor in the Soviet Union for five years after the war. I was born in Germany. We went to Canada in '53. I was a Cold War American Soldier in Germany along the Fulda Gap in 1976-'78 and served 37 years, a couple of wars, now 62 y.o. and a grandfather, cop, barber etc. War is cruel, an evil waste of resources and lives. Maybe inevitable; I hope not.

One of the best historical war songs ever. A real masterwork, and a great job of editing those old film clips. Thanks for posting.

The documentary footage was some of the best I've seen, until the second half which kept showing the *Germans* on the march. And even a crude animation of 2 Tigers flickering their souls to the wind would have been appreciated.27,000,000 Russian and other men, women, and children dead - a Nazi holocaust unto itself - but greatly facilitated by Stalin's late 1930s purge/massacre of the most progressive Red Army officers. And the Red Army's advance after Kursk (1943) was greatly speeded by our Lend-Lease equipment. And if the Japanese hadn't been committed against us in December 1941 and had overcome the trauma of their bitter defeat by the Red Army at Khalkin Gol and elsewhere in 1939, they might have opened a second front in the Far East, which would have denied Zhukov the Siberian Reserve necessary to save Moscow and throw the Nazis back. WE fought a multi-front WORLD war, carrying the full burden of the war with Bushido Japan.

In my opinion, Al Stewart's greatest tune. 20,000,000 Russians died in the Great Patriotic War. Those of you who believe that the West had the major role in defeating the Nazis just do not know whereof you speak. It was the Russians who won WWII; the West did mop up work.
