This was Al Stewart's first ever single, released in 1967 as the title track of his first album. It was not a success, but paved the way for Al's long and prolific career as a singer-songwriter and folk musician, including the U.S. Top 10 hits "Year of the Cat" and "Time Passages".

Always loved this, having bought the first album on spec, and played it in my bedsit. I'm surprised I never heard this on the radio in '67. I did hear the similar "Days Of Pearly Spencer" tho' and loved that too....but that was never a hit either. 1967 was a crowded market place of great songs!

FYI, this was not his first single. The Elf / Turn Into Earth came out a year earlier.

Some people are never happy - thank you for the upload - keep uploading the old tracks, they are great...I had all these on vinyl once upon a time, left them in someone's garage ...

I am impressed! I have my fathers old Phillips... I'll have to check the make but it's from about '75 and wow, man, some of these records sound far more thrilling than a CD. I love the remastered versions in the CDs but I agree, the sound is too sibilant or evened-out sometimes. Thank you for uploading the LP of this. It sounds just as it did when my Father would haul out his copy and play it for me when I was a little kid. Sadly, our copy is long gone but this brings tears to my eyes.

Screw CD! Way too digital, 12" vinyl sound way better... Great track on the other hand!

Although I have not found the album on CD, there is, however, a boxed set on CD entitled "To whom it may concern" That includes all the tracks from Bedsitter Images.Plus tracks from 2 other of Al's early albums. Have a look on Wikipedia. I hope this is helpful.

... but the LP pictured there is "The Early Years" which wasn't released until 1977. I like Al's comment on that LP: "Let's cash on on the success of "The Year of the Cat" and issue a double LP of tracks that were pre-Past, Present and Future that were little more than rumours for Amercian audiences." A critic's comment: "I don't know what this would sound like without the commercial backbeat, but I'm sure it would be better."

Hi, that song is called "Swiss Cottage Manoeuvres" and I think it was on the Bedsitter Images album - also one of my favourites from those long-ago days! I only have to play Al Stewart and I'm immediately catapulted back to my bedsitter days 1970-1979
