I feel like an ornary old man talking about this, like "Back in my day hardcore was hardcore, not fags who shop at Hot Topix playing Slayer riffs!" I guess its normal for things to evolve, I'm just very traditional in my taste. There a few new bands I consider "hardcore" If like the pre-1987 HC sound, check out:: The Alligators (Roger Meritt on vocals. Best thing hes done since 1983) OFF! (Keith Morris new band. yup trust me in europe no one knows hardcore punk all my buddies into stretches and beatdown know maybe 2-3 guys who actually know where hardcore came from :p also all the hardcore festivals never have any good bands

i just mean they changed the genre from circle jerks etc to the tough guy sound these days. nowadays most hardcore bands don't sound at all like a hardcore punk band if you know what i mean :p

This is really semantics, but basically the term "hardcore" was used to describe early 80s American punk bands that were starting to play harder and faster with none of the pop or artsy sensibilites of 70s punk. Over time it became its own sub-genre. However, to me, when I think of "real" hardcore I think of bands like Minor Threat, The Necros, SSD, Reagan Youth,. But most kids today will tell you hardcore is bands like Converge or Hatebreed, which to me have more to do with Metal than Punk.
