Well, carcass started as grindcore( and to be exact, they were one of the pioneers of the genre ) but later they went into more actual death metal and eventually become ( and one of the first bands to also create the genre) melodic death metal. I don't really believe melodeath started in sweden but they certainly made it more populra. For me though, finnish and german melodeath bands are my faves.

i believe "at the gates" was one of the first bands to surface in the melodeath genre, they started in 1990

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the whole melodeath scene kinda start in Gothenburg, Sweden? (Granted, I'm Finnish, I'm hugely biased towards what the Finns have done for melodeath :D )

Of course man...but when it comes to keyboard solos and that chilly atmosphere...Finland and Russia are the best...Sweden comes third through...they are more guitar oriented, thats why I made that statement...:)

Most Russian bands incorporate keys in a way Finnish bands would never be able to do and vise versa...lets just be happy that there are two awesome melodeath countries now! :)
