With modern zeplin technologies its more them flexibly possible for a aney dirigible to fly but the wight must be evanly distributed and fule sorce. And also, the sails could be unfurled when they are travaling with the wind the pulled in when traveling into the wind.

Go to their website, it's somewhere on there. I did it, can't for the life of me remember how, though.

Part of the reason sails work on water vessels is that the water resists the hull's motion. This semi-anchoring effect means that the wind in the sails can be used to move at an angle to the way the wind is blowing -- a move called "tacking." Without that effect, entire ship will act as one big sail that can only run before the wind. That's where the engines come in, of course, plus changing height to find a favorable air current...and in any case the Rule of Cool trumps physics any day!

I would imagine well-managed sails could actually be helpful, either as rudders or by adding power: since sailboats can sail faster than the wind, airships can fly faster than the wind. Plus, you want a backup plan for when you don't have the cash for coal.

So in my welding class, we have a wheel that looks like a ships wheel. I have this song on my MP3 player and put it on. I pretended to be a Steampunk captain commanding his ship during a terrible storm and felt like a sir.

@NineTurningMirrors If you have good wind, you can spare fuel by using sails. Event though, I agree with you, since sails get pretty pointless when you have a large balloon full of air and/or light gas.

@TheReaver11 if you look at the sails that are on the Airship you can see they are positioned as rudders so they can move the front of the ship. additionally the sails are used to catch wind so the ship can use less fuel

@KobunLord Also, the winds in the atmosphere are extremely fast and could easily propel the Ophelia along with its winds.

I love the way he says "barely there" <3

Sails on an airship are slightly impractical unless balanced with an equal amount of sail on the opposite side of the ship.

@NineTurningMirrors depends on which way the wind is blowing XD
