Working title: Äntligen krig.First released on the LP Super Trouper 3 November 1980. Also released as B side to Super Trouper single November 1980.

Lyrics:

They came from the hills

And they came from

The valleys and the plains

They struggled in the cold

In the heat and the snow

And in the rain

Came to hear him play

Play their minds away

We're all following a strange melody

We're all summoned by a tune

We're following the piper

And we dance beneath the moon

We're following the piper

And we dance beneath the moon for him

And we dance beneath the moon

Sub luna saltamus

They came from the south

From the west and the north

And from the east

They waited for the man

Like a parish is waiting

For the priest

Longed to hear him play

Play their minds away

We're all following a strange melody

We're all summoned by a tune

We're following the piper

And we dance beneath the moon

We're following the piper

And we dance beneath the moon for him

And we dance beneath the moon

Sub luna saltamus

He gave them a dream

He seduced everybody

In the land

The fire in his eyes

And the fear

Was a weapon

In his hand

So they let him play

Play their minds away

We're all following a strange melody

We're all summoned by a tune

We're following the piper

And we dance beneath the moon

We're following the piper

And we dance beneath the moon for him

And we dance beneath the moon

And we dance beneath the moon

Palm, Carl Magnus (2001). Bright Lights, Dark Shadows: The Real Story of Abba. Other lyrical subjects new to ABBA included that of fascist threats, as introduced on the medieval-sounding 'The Piper'. The words were inspired by one of the main characters in Stephen King's 1978 novel The Stand, a charismatic leader in the Adolf Hitler mould. "The lyrics deal with the fear that there will come a time when people will want such a leader again, "Björn explained".

The PIPER is PAN, the half goat/half man associated with the zodiac sign Capricorn. In his highest form, he is the Great Father, protector of children, animals, forests and all wild places as yet untouched by humans. His counterpart is the Moon-ruled Cancer, sign of the Great Mother and the goddess in all her guises (like Diana). A statue of Moses depicts him with goat horns. He descended a mountain with laws to guide those who fell into depravity. Every 2,100 years we shift from one zodiac sign rulership to the next. We now move from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. The shift finds humans once again in a fallen state. Myth has it that in the darkest hour an avatar (saint) or group of wise ones come down from the mountain to lure us back to higher ground with sweet spiritual music. Wielding two pipes, the music played by the piper either liberates those who seek heaven or drives the sinful ones mad--Pan-Demon-ium. Pandemonium. Thus, as in Hindu myth, Pan is both creator and destroyer--take your pick. Live according to natural law or remain blind.

Did anyone notice the hidden message in this song ?1) the word "PIPER" sounds like "BIBLE"2) "we're following the "bible" and we're dancing in the moon for "HIM"3) " come to hear him play, PLAY THEIR MINDS AWAY "4) "like a parish is waiting for the priest"5) "He gave them a dream, He seduced everybody in the land... The fire in his eyes, and the fear was a weapon in his hand"We know that Bjorn has spoken against organised religions before, is this song about his views on how religions manipulates people's minds ?(I know of the legend of the piper in folklore, but more than that I think this song is a reflection on the dangers of religion in general ...)
